Griffith Observatory is a historical landmark located in Los Angeles, California which sits atop the Hollywood Hills. It commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including Downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. A popular destination for star-gazers and students and has appeared in science-fiction movies accompanied by figures ranging from Gene Autry to Arnold Schwarzenegger, it even had a cameo role in "Rebel Without a Cause".
After nearly 67 years of public use, Griffith Observatory closed its doors for its first comprehensive renovation and expansion.
Cole Lighting was the supplier of choice to undertake this massive restoration, replication and refurbishment. There was a need to be sympathetic to the "historic fabric" of the interior and exterior while maintaining strict adherence to guidelines that were required and developed during this project to meet the State Historic Building code. Thoughtful use of LED lighting and material finishes along with many hours of mock up and final production made this project a success.
